World Consumption Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4)

Sulfuric acid is one of the largest-volume industrial chemicals produced in the world. The production of fertilizers, especially phosphate fertilizers from wet-process phosphoric acid, is the major end-use market for sulfuric acid, accounting for over 60% of total world consumption in 2017. This share is expected to increase through 2022, even though slightly higher growth is expected for chemical applications. About 17% of global sulfuric acid is consumed for about 20 chemical processes, with the balance being consumed in a wide variety of industrial and technical applications. Major growth drivers on a global level in decreasing order are use for phosphoric acid, titanium dioxide, hydrofluoric acid, ammonium sulfate, and for uranium processing and metallurgical applications.

The majority of sulfuric acid is generated by burning sulfur; smelter acid is involuntarily produced and its economics are driven primarily by metal markets. Increased recovery of by-product sulfuric acid at smelters has had a significant impact on the industry, leading to increased trade in sulfuric acid (since by-product producers are not necessarily located near acid markets) and forcing some sulfur-burning plants to close. About 4% of world production enters the extraregional trade markets. One portion of the sulfuric acid business that has grown as a result of environmental restrictions is the portion that regenerates sulfuric acid. Stricter environmental regulations along with satisfying customer demands and achieving operational efficiency are resulting in increased spending on plant upgrades among sulfuric acid producers. Global demand for sulfuric acid is projected to rise at an annual rate of about 2% in the next five years. China is the major market, accounting for more than 37% of consumption in 2017, followed by North America with about 16%. Africa, Latin America, Eastern and Western Europe, and Southwest Asia are also large users. Fertilizer demand for sulfuric acid is forecast to grow at about 2.4% per year during the forecast period, while demand for chemical use is expected to grow at 2.5% per year. Industrial uses will decline slightly through 2022. 1. Raw materials in pricing.

Raw materials for products of organic chemistry as caprolactam, adipic acid, acetic acid, polystyrene, vinyl acetate - are oil and natural gas. The increase in the number of methanol production sites in 2014 is due to the growing demand for this type of raw materials from processing plants producing acetic acid, vinyl acetate, etc. Regarding products made from methanol the cost price in most cases is higher than the market price which excludes the possibility of trading on the international sce

5. Pricing and consumption of polystyrenes.

The world market of polystyrene makes 500 million tons per year. It's production is concentrated mainly in the regions of the largest consumers of polystyrene: East and South Asia (50% of the world production). At the same time about 85% of the production capacity of this region is in China. The price of polystyrene directly depends on the cost of styrene. But at the same time the consumer demand can be a fundamental factor that can both restrain price rise as well as to stimulate it.

The main consumers of adipic acid and caprolactam are the USA, Western Europe, China. This fact is due to a large number of plants for the processing of adipic acid and caprolactam are based in these regions. These regions also have facilities for the production of cyclohexane, which is a semiproduct for the production of caprolactam and adipic acid. European textile fiber manufacturers are gradually losing their market share, failing to compete with products from Asia (mainly from China, Taiwan and lately from Indonesia and Vietnam), where labor costs are much lower and the quality control is constantly growing, imitating western technologies. The Asian region with China in the lead, is a rapidly growing market for adipic acid (an average annual growth of 5.3% up to 2017). It's growth is stimulated by the ever growing consumption of this chemical in the urethane industry of China. The availability of benzene in the European region is growing, and the price is going down affected by the oil quotes decline.
